Fishermen's Bastion - Budapest, Hungary

I went to several European countries at the end of 2006. I was in Budapest for about a week over Christmas. I would spend a lot of time walking all the beautiful streets and my favourite place to go was the Castle Hill where the Fishermen's Bastion was. Overlooking the mighty Danube, the Bastion was made out of white stone, with beautiful cone turrets. In the middle ages the spot was used as a fish market and the Guild of Fishermen were responsible for guarding this particular part of the defence walls. I loved this statue as it showed a man, on guard and full of pride, yet he had his sleeves rolled up which to me showed that he is a working man, a fisherman.

These are my most recent drawings, done during my Drawing Class at Monash University. This was the first time the model was fully clothed and we had very few instructions, simply we were asked to focus on angles.

Horizontal Green

I was totally surprised at how this piece turned out. I was simply trying to use up some of the left over paint on my palette and the tape I had left over from holding down whatever piece I was actually focusing on. I Love the light green in this piece, to me it feels really Australian, fresh but gritty at the same time.

This was probably the first squiggle drawing I did. Of course I did it by accident. I think I was trying to draw a picture for a birthday card I was making and this happened. This drawing really does remind me of my father's work. I really like this piece because of the fact I didn't use just one medium, which is rare for me when I draw.

This is just one of the random squiggle sketches I do. These are just free form, no model doodles I do every once in a while. Sometimes if I find an old marker and start to sketch with it to check if it works, I can keep going and end up with twenty little drawings, easily. This is one of the bigger ones.

Horizontal Black w. Green

I have done a few paintings with the whole horizontal aspect to them, this is just one of them.
Every time I look at this painting I can feel the paint between my fingers. Alot of my paintings try and express my tactile experiences in making the piece, visually. I always try and think, 'What would this feeling look like?'.
This idea was inspired by an aboriginal piece of art I once saw when I was quite young, visiting the NGV Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square, with my mother. It was a painting by Emily Kngwarreye, called yam dreaming. I remember it as a huge painting in black and white. I was told that Emily Kngwarreye's role in her tribe was to collect the yams and the painting was how it felt to have her hands in the dirt trying to find the yams.

I recently went travelling through several European countries and whilst in Vienna I visited the Museums Quartier. In particular I spent time at the Leopold Museum and was amazed by the incredible pieces by Egon Schiele.
Back at my hostel I drew these pieces that were directly inspired by the museum and in particular Egon Schiele.

DOT N'fa

I have quite a large collection of free postcards that I keep in a shoebox under my desk. One of the postcards had a picture of N'fa on it and I primarily planned to use the image as a stencil design. While re-drawing the picture I for some reason picked up my compass and started going over the drawing by punching holes in it. Although it took quite some time and my hands needed a good deal of rest afterwards, I am really happy with the result.
